Tache by K. J. Phang (PDF)

“Tache”  by Phang Kok Jun (Harp Solo)

The nanyang style refers to a style of art practiced in the regions south of the South China Sea in the mid 1900s. The works reflect a combination of European techniques such as Impressionism as well as elements of Asian culture and lifestyle.
This piece, inspired by the Nanyang style, combines Western musical techniques and concepts with Asian musical materials – most distinctively, the pelog or gamelan scale. The title tache which means “spot” in French, refers to the way impressionist artists such as Claude Monet dab spots of ink in their painting – an idea that is translated into music in this piece, through dabs of sound that eventually form a larger picture.
